The Early Childhood Diploma Course is designed to equip individuals who wish to train as Montessori teachers with a high level of professional understanding and a thorough knowledge of the Montessori method for children aged 2½ through 6 years. It Provides the right balance of theory and practical experience which the student requires, and gives instruction in the use of Montessori materials for 2½ through 6 years of age range across the curriculum areas.
COURSE CONTENT AND SYLLABUS
The diploma covers both the academic and practical phases, Syllabus include:
⇒ Montessori History, Philosophy and Pedagogy
⇒ Child Development/Psychology
⇒ Observation methods, techniques and assessment
⇒ Montessori curriculum and materials including the creative areas for 2½ through 6 years
⇒ Classroom Management and Communication Skills
⇒ School Administration and Management
⇒ Child in the family and in the society
The practical phase of the course is composed of material making (teacher made materials) and a minimum of 300 hours of supervised teaching in a Montessori early childhood classroom.
Option 1: Full-time study (11 Months)
For full time students, the academic phase of the course is covered through attendance of classes:
⇒ 5 days a week (9am-2pm) September – October
The Practicum phase of the course is fulfilled by the students spending 2 days a week (8am – 2pm) within the same period in a proper Montessori classroom. Upon successful completion of all aspects of course, students (full-time and part-time) will be awarded the Early Childhood Montessori Diploma which qualifies you to work with children within the Early Childhood environment.
Option 2: Part-time study (16 months)
For part-time students the academic phase is broken down into 4 semesters:
⇒ September to December
⇒ February to May, and January to April
⇒ May to August of the following year.
⇒ Lectures are taken on Saturdays only from 7am to 3pm. (September to December)
The practicum phase of the course is taken within 2 years of the completion of the academic phase.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY AND QUALIFICATION
Candidates applying for entry into the Early Childhood Diploma Course (EC) must:
⇒ Have a minimum qualification of Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized University.
⇒ Be a minimum of 20 years of age.
Students with an OND (Ordinary National Diploma) or NCE (National Certificate of Education) who want to apply for the programme must have been working with children within the 21/2 through 6 years age-range for a minimum of five years with proof of employment to qualify. Such applications will have to undergo a mandatory test and interview to determine their ability to cope with the requirements of the course./p>
